Interlock Device
Interlock is a device installed in a motor vehicle which helps prevent drunk driving by requiring a breath test before the vehicle will start. It’s available for anyone who has been convicted of a DUI and subsequently been determined by the court as eligible for the Interlock program. Most of the time the use of the Interlock device is a way for a person to get a restricted license, and thus get back on the road.
Since 1996, when the Interlock program first came to Colorado, A & J Tire and Automotive has been a Denver-area representative of Guardian Interlock Systems, a Department of Motor Vehicles approved Interlock program.
We realize that most people only obtain an Interlock device because they’re required to do so, and that the time involved and the money spent is a hassle you don’t want. We are happy to provide information to help you use the device properly, but we have no control over how long you need to lease the device, or how often you must come in to have the device checked. Also, please keep in mind that the prices originate with the manufacturer, and vary according to the year and type of vehicle.
Here’s how the Interlock pricing structure breaks down:
If your car is a year 2005 or older:
If you lease the device for eight months or more, most installations are free, and the lease payment for the first month is waived. Monthly lease payments are $62 a month, along with a one-time payment of $35 to test the battery and charging system before the Interlock is installed.
If you install the device for less than eight months, the installation fee is $55.
If your car is a year 2006 or newer:
All of the above applies with one exception. If you lease the device for eight months or more, there is an installation fee of $50.
Certain types of vehicles, mainly luxury vehicles, also require an installation fee of $50, regardless of their year. They are:
- VW
- BMW
- Audi
- Mercedes
- Porsche
- Lexus
- Infiniti
- Volvo
- Cadillac
- Lincoln
- Saab
- Mini
We cannot install the device in SOME MODELS of the following vehicles (so Contact Us for more information):
- Land Rover
- Jaguar
Finally, hybrid vehicles are an additional $150 special vehicle charge at time of installation.
Once the device is installed, you’ll have to return to A & J Tire and Service Center either every month or every other month (depending on the individual circumstances) so that the device can be re-calibrated, data can be collected and a lease payment can be made.
